Sunflower FC: Nurturing Talent for Banyana Banyana and Beyond
At Sunflower Women FC, our mission has always been clear: to develop players capable of excelling on the national and international stages. As the founder and coach, Siyabonga Malinga, reflects on the journey, we are proud to see the impact of our work as several of our players continue to shine on the global stage.
Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis recently announced a 23-member squad set to face Jamaica in two international friendlies. Among the squad are Mamelodi Sundowns stars Asanda Hadebe and Kholosa Biyana, as well as University of Pretoria’s Ntando Phahla—all of whom started their football journeys with Sunflower FC before progressing to the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Coach Malinga expressed pride in the club’s contribution to these players’ development.
“Kholosa was a bit older when she joined us, but we played a role in moulding her playing style. We are very proud of both of them; they have both achieved a lot. I started working with Asanda when she was only 10. We gave her the basic skills in football though she was already talented,” Malinga shared.
Asanda Hadebe’s journey stands out, having debuted for the national team at a young age. Coach Malinga believes she has the potential to grow further, with hopes of seeing her play in Europe one day.
“Ow wow, I didn’t know that Phahla was called up to the national team! We are very proud of her. She is really doing well at TUKS,” Malinga added.
Sunflower FC’s influence extends beyond national borders, with players like Sphumelele Shamase and Thubelihle Shamase playing for Lithuania’s FC Gintra, and Yolanda Nduli representing the University of Johannesburg.
A Legacy of Empowerment
What started as a mission to keep young girls off the streets has grown into a powerhouse of talent development in South Africa’s women’s football. Coach Malinga celebrates how far women’s football has come, stating:
“When we started in women’s football, we didn’t know it will get to this level. We didn’t know Banyana will compete with such teams. So, as coaches, we are happy to see these players competing internationally because when they play at this level, then they come back with experience to add to the Hollywoodbets Super League and also get opportunities to be scouted internationally.”
Commitment to Excellence
This week, Coach Malinga reached another milestone, graduating with a CAF B-Licence. He emphasized the importance of staying updated with football’s evolving tactics and rules to better serve players.
“Football changes a lot, so it’s very important to keep updated. Working in development means I always need to know what laws are changing and how I can improve technically and tactically because I have youth and senior teams that I need to develop for the national team,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Sunflower FC remains committed to empowering women in football, creating opportunities, and pushing boundaries in sports. We are incredibly proud of our players who represent us at the highest levels, and we look forward to continuing to produce world-class talent.
